ST. CROIX RIVER, (Douglas Co., 6 miles west of Gordon)
LENGTH 10 mi., CLASS I-II, GRADIENT: 5' per mile
SEASON: Late spring and sometimes early summer.
PUT-IN: Gordon Dam. 6 miles east of Gordon on Co. Hwy. Y.
TAKEOUT: Louis Park primitive camping area 1 mile downstream of the Co. Hwy. T Bridge or continue up to 70 miles downstream.
GAGE: USGS gage near Danbury. Flows of 900 cfs are minimal. Flows above 1500 cfs offer a more exciting run.
FUN FACT: Some long stretches of swift water and rapids suitable for open canoe.
SHUTTLE: From the put-in drive 2 miles east along the south shore of the river until you cross the river. Shortly after crossing the river you will come to a Y in the road. Take Crotte Brook Rd. which parallels the river. When you reach Co. Hwy. T, turn onto it and head west a short distance to Rocky Brook Tr. Take this road 2 miles south to Park Rd. Take this road south about 1 mile to the river.
This river was included in the National Wild Rivers Act of 1968. It is an excellent canoe river with several options for day trips or overnights. This upper stretch offers some of the most challenging water. Further downstream you will continue to find excellent canoeing.
