WHITE RIVER (Ashland Co., WI, 6 mi. south of Ashland)

LENGTH 0.8 mi., CLASS II-III

SEASON: A week or two in early spring.

PUT-IN: Hwy. 112 Bridge below the dam on White River Flowage.

TAKEOUT: South end of Beaser Ave. on the river left shore (may be private property?). An alternative takeout would be the Hwy. 13 bridge if you do not mind the flatwater.

GAGE: USGS gage downstream of the put-in bridge

FUN FACT: Short stretch of rapids at the top

FIRST DESCENT:

SHUTTLE: From the put-in drive north on Hwy. 112 for 1.8 miles, turn east on Hegstrom Rd. and take it for 1 mile. Then turn south on Beaser Ave. and follow it 1.5 miles to the river. As the road splits, stay to the right to head upstream.

The intermediate whitewater on this section is short, but there is continuous class I-II rapids throughout the 14 mile stretch above White River Flowage. The average gradient is 10' per mile and there is almost always enough water for this upper section. The minimum flow is 175 cfs for the upper section.
