STURGEON RIVER, CANYON SECTION
(Baraga, Co., MI, 9 mi. south of L'Anse)
LENGTH: 1mi., CLASS: IV-V, GRADIENT:
SEASON: A week or two in early spring is the most intense, with possibilities for a lower water run for another couple weeks towards the end of the spring melt and at times throughout the summer.
PUT-IN: Hwy. 41 Bridge across the river.
TAKEOUT: At the end of the canyon approximately 1 mile downstream on river right.
GAGE: USGS gage on the Sturgeon River near Sidnaw. At 800 cfs this run starts to get rather meaty. This run holds it's water well and can be fun down around 250 cfs.
FUN FACT: Extreme whitewater through a scenic gorge when high but suitable for strong intermediates at lower flows.
FIRST DESCENT:
SHUTTLE: Carry your boat back up to the put-in after you run this section.
Half a dozen nice drops in a short bedrock canyon. At high flows things get pushy, the steep walls may be intimidating, and some powerful hydraulics can develop in constricted areas. At lower flows the power factor is considerably lower and there are some good portage routes for any of the drops you might choose not to run.
