SILVER RIVER, upper section
(Baraga Co., MI, , 8 mi. east of L'Anse)
LENGTH: 2.5 mi., CLASS: IV-V, GRADIENT:
SEASON: A week or two in early spring.
PUT-IN: Indian Rd. Bridge across the river in Copper Country State Forest.
TAKEOUT: Dynamite Rd. Bridge across the river or continue on the lower section.
GAGE: You used to take a tape measurement at the Skanee Rd. bridge but that has been replaced and now there is a USGS gauge.
FUN FACT: The classic expert creek run of the U.P.
FIRST DESCENT: Tom Aluni, Dave Blinde, Jerry Giru, Jim Pedginsky, Jim Rada from Minnesota (1979 or 1980). The Hoofer crew had run the lower Silver, and all the drops down to the regular takeout. After the run Fred Young told the Minnesota paddlers how good it was and that everything had been run. The Minnesota crew went up the next weekend and put in on the Upper Silver by mistake (the first descent of the Upper), and were amazed that everything had been run! Fred Young, Bob Obst, and Matt Kuckuk went up the weekend after that and ran the Upper.
